About Torpedo
A sea battle game made by a small studio in Budapest.
Why a sea battle game
Almost everyone has played it: two grids on squared paper, a fleet drawn in pencil, and a friend calling out squares across a desk. In Hungary it is called torpedó, which is where our game gets its name. It is one of the few games that needs nothing but paper, and one of the few that is just as tense the hundredth time.
Before writing a line of Torpedo we studied five of the most popular sea battle apps and wrote down what they got right and wrong. Then we set a simple bar for Torpedo: it should feel like leaning over a good tabletop game, it should play fair, and it should use the devices people actually carry, from a two-player battle on one iPhone to SharePlay on a FaceTime call and a folding iPhone standing on the table.
How we keep it fair
- The computer never peeks. It aims from hits, misses and sunk ships only, the same information you have. Expert remembers where you liked to hide ships in earlier games; that is the only way it gets better at finding them.
- Sealed fleets online. Online and nearby battles seal both fleets before the first shot and check every result at the end, so cheating is caught.
- No pay-to-win. Nothing you can buy helps against another player. Boosters exist only for battles against the computer and never count on leaderboards.
How we write the guides
Our guides are written by the team that built the game. When we make a claim about strategy, we test it: the strategy and ship-placement guides use simulations of thousands of games, built from the same rules as Torpedo, and we publish how we ran them. History and rules guides cite their sources.
