Best Games for iPhone Duo: 6 Picks for Apple's Foldable iPhone

A generic folding screen stands half open on a wet chart table in a ship's cabin at night, a teal sea grid on the upright half and amber hit squares on the flat half, with a brass lamp and a stormy sea through the porthole

Quick answer

The best games for iPhone Duo are the ones that use the fold. Torpedo turns the half-open phone into a sea battle game case, and Twofold uses the raised half to hide each player's board in seven classics. Ticket to Ride, Kingdomino, Patchwork and Lichess suit the big inner display but haven't announced fold features.

The best games for iPhone Duo are the ones that do something with the fold. Torpedo is our pick: stand iPhone Duo half open and the sea battle splits like a folding game case, your fleet upright and the enemy's waters flat under your fingers. Twofold: Pass & Play is the other game we found built around the hinge; its raised half hides your board in seven classic games. After those two, the best choices are two-player board games that already run on iPad and suit the 7.6-inch inner display: Ticket to Ride, Kingdomino Deluxe, Patchwork The Game and Lichess.

We make Torpedo, so we're biased. That's why every other entry links to its own App Store page or developer site, and why this list says plainly which games are fold-aware and which only play well on a bigger screen.

1. Torpedo: the best sea battle for a folding phone

The sea battle has always been played on something that folds: two pages of squared paper, or a plastic case with two lids. iPhone Duo folds the same way, so Torpedo uses both poses. Half open on a table, the upright half shows your own fleet, and the flat half holds the enemy's waters where you aim and fire.

Open the phone flat and hold it like a book, and each board gets its own half, so you see both fleets at once. Everything else in Torpedo comes along: a computer opponent from Beginner to Expert, the Admiral's Campaign with 30 missions, two players on one device with a handoff screen, Nearby play over Wi-Fi with no internet, online battles through Game Center and SharePlay battles in FaceTime. More on the iPhone Duo page.

Why it made the list

  • Stand iPhone Duo half open and the battle splits like a folding game case: your fleet upright, the enemy's waters flat under your fingers
  • Open it like a book and each board gets its own half
  • Every way to play: the computer offline, two players on one device, Nearby without internet, online, battles by turns and SharePlay over FaceTime

Keep in mind

  • Brand new, so it has no App Store ratings yet
  • Runs on iPhone and iPad with iOS 17 or later
  • Free with ads; Remove Ads or the optional Admiral Club subscription turns them off

2. Twofold: Pass & Play: best collection of hidden-board classics

Apart from Torpedo, Twofold is the only game we found that builds its play around the fold. It launches on October 23, 2026, the same day as iPhone Duo. Its developer, Inzention (the App Store lists the seller as Alexandra Swan), describes the trick on its App Store page: "Half-folded, the raised screen covers your board like the lid of a game box." You fold the phone shut to pass, the outer screen tells the next player it's their turn, and their side stays covered until they tap Reveal.

The seven games are Broadside (hiding and sinking ships), Who's Who, Liar's Dice for two to four players, Codebreaker, Fog of War (chess where you only see what your pieces reach), plus Chess and Four in a Row for laying the phone flat between two players. Every game has a computer opponent on Easy, Medium or Hard. On any other iPhone or iPad, a Pass button does what the fold does.

Why it's here: the raised half does the job of the cardboard screen that hidden-information board games put between players.

Keep in mind: it's free to try, then $1.99 per game or $4.99 for all of them, with no ads and no subscription. It comes in English only. As a launch-day release it has no ratings yet, and we judged it from its App Store listing and website, not from play. Its sea battle is one game of seven, so if that's the game you want, Torpedo goes much deeper on rules and modes.

Board games that suit the big inner display

None of the next four has announced iPhone Duo features as of October 8, 2026. We picked them because they are two-player board games that already run on iPad and have a mode for two people on one device, so the 7.6-inch inner display gives the board room and passing the phone works the way it does on a table.

Apple's developer guide says an app that hasn't been updated for iPhone Duo shows up in the center of the open display with empty space around it. Updated apps fill most of the inner display, and the newest versions use all of it. Apple also notes that an app that already works on iPad is "well on your way" to supporting iPhone Duo. That's the bet behind these four picks.

3. Ticket to Ride: best big-map game for couch play

Marmalade Game Studio's Ticket to Ride is the licensed digital version of the train-route board game, and a cross-country rail map is the kind of board that gains the most from 7.6 inches. Its App Store listing offers online matches, asynchronous games across several days, single-player against AI opponents, and "couch play" against a friend sitting next to you. It has 4.6 stars from 11,671 US ratings and was updated on September 23, 2026.

Keep in mind: it costs $4.99, and the extra maps are in-app purchases, from $12.99 for an expansion to $49.99 for the largest bundle. The free Companion app that hides your tickets on a second phone works only with the PlayStation, Switch, Xbox and Steam versions. It's a 959 MB download.

4. Kingdomino Deluxe: best quick game for two to four

Kingdomino is the domino-style kingdom builder, and the App Store listing for the official app promises Pass & Play on one device, AI opponents, online and cross-platform play, and games of 10 to 20 minutes. It says there are no ads and nothing pay-to-win; the purchases are castles and other cosmetics from $1.99 to $4.99. It costs $2.99, holds 4.8 stars from 211 US ratings, and was updated on October 1, 2026.

Keep in mind: with only 211 ratings it is the least proven pick here, and like the others it hasn't said anything about iPhone Duo yet.

5. Patchwork The Game: best board game made for exactly two

Uwe Rosenberg's quilting game is built for two players, which makes it a natural fit for a phone you can open between you. The App Store listing offers a local game with a friend, AI opponents on easy, medium or hard, and cross-platform online play, and says all in-app purchases are purely cosmetic. It costs $3.99 and has 4.2 stars from 220 US ratings. Our best 2-player board games list has more on Patchwork as a duel.

Keep in mind: its last update was on January 29, 2026. The other three were updated in September or October 2026, so they look likelier to get an iPhone Duo update soon.

6. Lichess: best free game for two at one table

Lichess is the free, open-source chess app from lichess.org, which describes itself as "free (really), libre, no-ads". Its App Store listing includes playing over the board with a friend and a chess clock for over-the-board games, along with online play, puzzles and Stockfish analysis. It was updated on October 6, 2026, and has 4.1 stars from 655 US ratings.

Keep in mind: it's chess and nothing else, and the App Store lists English as its only language, although the listing says the app is translated into 55 languages.

What makes a game good on a foldable phone

Apple's own guidance for iPhone Duo is a useful checklist. Its Human Interface Guidelines list the ways people hold the phone: "partially folded like a book, placed down on a surface, or standing on its edges." For games, Apple asks developers to make the game "playable in every device pose" and to fill the screen as the pose changes. Here is what we looked for:

  1. It uses the fold for something. A game that puts one board on each half, or hides one player's view behind the raised half, uses the hardware. In an Apple developer talk, Apple explains that apps can read whether the phone is closed, partially open or fully open, plus the hinge angle.
  2. Nothing important sits on the crease. Apple calls the folding area a reserved region and tells developers to keep important elements clear of the center when the phone is partially open.
  3. It keeps your game when you open or close the phone. Apple asks apps to keep the same state and controls across the two displays, so a battle you start on the outer screen should carry on when you open it.
  4. It works for two people. A 7.6-inch display opened flat on a table is a small game board, and that suits pass-and-play and turn-based games more than fast action games.
  5. It plays everywhere else too. Both fold-aware picks also run on ordinary iPhones and iPads, so a friend without iPhone Duo can still play.

Closed, iPhone Duo shows Torpedo on the 5.4-inch outer display, with the controls along the side as Apple's guidelines describe.

iPhone Duo for games: the facts

All of these come from Apple's iPhone Duo announcement of September 9, 2026.

iPhone Duo

Outer display5.4 inches, 90 percent of the screen area of iPhone 18 Pro
Aspect ratiothe same on both displays, so content scales proportionally

Softwareships with iOS 27.1
Pricefrom $1,999 in the US (256GB)
Releasepre-orders from October 16, on sale October 23, 2026

Apple's announcement calls the inner display "a large canvas for viewing content, gaming, and multitasking," but it names no games. The third-party apps it says are already taking advantage of the folding design are Netflix, Zoom and Slack.

How we picked

We searched Apple's newsroom, Apple's developer pages and the App Store for games whose developers state iPhone Duo support, as of October 8, 2026. Only two describe fold-aware play in their own words: Torpedo and Twofold. Every other entry had to meet three tests on its US App Store listing:

  1. A mode for two people on one device (pass and play, couch play, local or over-the-board play).
  2. iPad support, since Apple says an app that already works on iPad is well on its way to supporting iPhone Duo.
  3. An update in 2026, so the developer is still working on it.

Ratings, prices, purchase ranges and update dates come from the US App Store on October 8, 2026. We didn't count ratings toward the ranking, because the two fold-aware games are too new to have any.

How to tell if a game is ready for iPhone Duo

  1. Read the description. Developers who did the work say so, like Twofold's "Made for iPhone Duo" or Torpedo's tabletop and book layouts.
  2. Check the version history. Apple started accepting iPhone Duo optimized apps and games on October 5, 2026, so an update after that date that mentions iPhone Duo is a good sign.
  3. Open the game on the phone. If it sits in the middle of the inner display with empty space around it, the developer hasn't rebuilt it for iPhone Duo yet.
  4. Look at the screenshots. Apple will require iPhone Duo screenshots for apps and games submitted from April 2027, so before then, Duo screenshots on a listing mean the developer chose to show the foldable.

Questions people ask

What are the best games for iPhone Duo?

Torpedo and Twofold are the two games we found that are built around the fold. Torpedo turns the half-open phone into a sea battle game case, and Twofold uses the raised half to hide each player's board. Ticket to Ride, Kingdomino Deluxe, Patchwork The Game and Lichess suit the large inner display for two players.

Which games support iPhone Duo's fold?

As of October 8, 2026, we found two games whose developers describe fold-aware play: Torpedo (tabletop and book layouts) and Twofold: Pass & Play (a raised half that hides your board, and folding shut to pass). Apple's iPhone Duo press release names Netflix, Zoom and Slack as third-party apps already using the folding design, but no games.

Do regular iPhone games work on iPhone Duo?

Yes, but not always full screen. Apple says apps that haven't been updated for iPhone Duo appear in the center of the open inner display with empty space around them. Updated apps fill most of the display or all of it, depending on their version.

When does iPhone Duo come out and how much is it?

Pre-orders start on Friday, October 16, 2026, and iPhone Duo goes on sale on Friday, October 23, 2026, in the US and more than 70 countries and regions. It starts at $1,999 in the US with 256GB of storage.

Can two people play one game on iPhone Duo?

Yes. Torpedo has a mode for two players on one device with a handoff screen, and its tabletop layout puts the two boards on the two halves. Twofold's hidden-board games pass by folding the phone shut. Ticket to Ride, Kingdomino Deluxe, Patchwork and Lichess also list a same-device mode.
